I Try to Redeem Myself: Name That Celeb Sketch Round Three

Name That Celebrity Sketch, Round ThreeOkay, I put a little more effort into this one; Hopefully I'll do a little better this time around. The last round of Name That Celebrity Sketch was a little embarrassing. This sketch is a better likeness, I think, and a better drawing generally. I can't give myself all the credit though—I switched tools between the first two sketches and this one. I had been using my Rotring 700 mechanical pencil, which takes 0.7mm leads, and an old Staedtler eraser. Nothing particularly wrong with these tools, but I'm sketching in an unlined Moleskine notebook, roughly 5 by 8 inches. These are relatively coarse tools and not a lot of space in which to work.

For this sketch I brought home my Rotring Newton mechanical pencil, which takes 0.5mm leads. There was no good reason for it to be in the studio anyway, since I nearly exclusively use my Tombow Monotech 500s—I have one in 0.5mm and one with 0.3mm leads. If anything, I should be keeping the Rotring at the Studio, since I don't have another 0.7mm pencil.

What made a bigger difference was bringing home my electric eraser. Since it rotates, I don't have to rub it back and forth across the drawing and subsequently I have better control over where I'm erasing. It's great for smoothing out lines. The electric eraser takes narrow erasers, which leaves a much smaller contact patch with the paper, making it that much more precise a tool.

I can neither credit my tools with a good drawing nor blame a poor one on them, but having better, more appropriate tools does make it easier to do the good work.

Anyway, this face should be familiar to more of you than Billie Piper was, so between that and it being a better sketch it should be easier for you.
