Ya Vote

Today San Franciscans made their choices for Mayor, District Attorney, and Sheriff, as well as a number of City ballot initiatives, mostly about borrowing money (allegedly) for street repairs and changes to the contributions City employees make to their pensions.

The mayoral race was on schedule; Lt Governor Gavin Newsom left his post as Mayor when he was elected to Sacramento, but he would have termed out this year anyway so he wouldn't have been running anyway. Instead the «incumbent» is Ed Lee, the City Administrator who was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to replace Newsom as interim mayor. Lee was considered for the post only after he pledged not to run for office in 2011 in return for a guarantee that he could get his old job as City Administrator back once he was done serving as interim mayor.

What goes downhill must come up

ImageI was up for a short while before heading out for my coffee/morning walk, but it's pretty close to first thing. Following doctor's orders I had a very nice walk and following doctor's suggestion I got regular coffee rather than decaf. The point is to see if we can get my mind better focused. When I quit caffeine a couple years back I honestly noticed no difference in focus or my sleep cycle. No difference in my ability to wake up or to get to sleep. So I'm not really optimistic about the caffeine experiment. Still, if I didn't notice a difference when I quit, perhaps the worst outcome will be not noticing a difference when I start.

I'm not sure why I picked the Starbucks at Mariposa and Bryant. I'm not really all that fond of Starbucks, and the Mission is lousy with coffee places I could have gone and had an equivalent walk. Perhaps a project for the future would be to make a tour of the coffee shops in the Mission and have a different cup—and a different walk—each day

Walk, don't run

Distance:
4.60Km
Time:

I've been instructed by one of my doctors to do a ten minute walk every day. It's embarrassing to have to be told to do this, but she was right for a lot of reasons. I get too hung up on having to run or having to do some substantial distance. Ten minutes is barely more than walking out the door and turning around to come back. Seriously it's a third of a mile out and a third of a mile back, more or less. Three blocks down the hill to Starbucks and back would count. …go on, keep reading about Walk, don't run

Mission to Philz

Philz counterI didn't race yesterday evening and since I'm supposed to take it easy I decided to finish out my week with a walk. Maybe a very short walk tomorrow, but no running. I want to be ready to run on Sunday.

As was suggested in a comment on an earlier post, I went to the original Philz Coffee to get my morning brew. A walk through the Mission on a sunny midmorning is a much more lively experience than my treks through industrial neighborhoods to get to the Mission Bay Philz. …go on, keep reading about Mission to Philz

Race Day

Distance:
11.27Km
Time:

This morning I ran the Survivor Harbor 7. It's a great course around Baltimore Harbor, and took us around Fort McHenry, around the Inner Harbor, past Fells Point and finishing in Canton. The day was perfect: sunny and about 60 degrees. I don't have the official time yet, but by my watch I ran the seven miles in 1:05:35. …go on, keep reading about Race Day
