As if the rest of the aggravation wasn’t enough
plus someone stepped on my $120 sunglasses. Hopefully they can be fixed, and I’ve had them for three years now (making them a better buy than the $5 sunglassses I used to buy every couple weeks), but still annoying.
$5 sunglasses last forever.
$5 sunglasses last forever. $120 sunglasses self-destruct on contact with my face.

I won’t buy sunglasses over $20, because I usually step on them myself.

I’ve bought four pairs of sunglasses since 1996. The first was a pair of Oakley E‑Wires ($100), and I replaced those with these CK shades ($120). I also bought a pair at a truck stop to wear at Burning Man last year for $10. Other than that, I have my cycling glasses, which I won’t spend more than $50 for – over $50 you’re not paying for technology or materials, you’re paying marketdroids to tell you what you think looks cool. Which is fine for out on the street, but not on the bike.
I do the same thing with pens. Considering how often I lose everything else I own, I think it’s significant that I have been able to keep track of $120 shades and an $85 pen for years on end. Paying more builds a psychological wall against my losing items.
Of course, it’s only *willingness* to pay more. I wouldn’t spend $85 or $185 on a pen I didn’t really really like or sunglasses I didn’t think looked good on me.
And shit, right now I can’t pay 85¢ for anything, so it’s a moot question.…
