Short spin

I took the racing bike out for the first ride of the year. It wasn’t as nice out there as it looked a few hours ago, and I turned back real early on in deference to the chill, and general lack of motivation. I can say I got in my prescribed 20 minutes of moderate activity, but that’s sort of nothing.

In any case, I got to burn off some nervous energy, I guess.

Bicycling just isn’t fun the way I remember it being in other places. In Connecticut, North Carolina, and New York, I could get on my bike, hit the road, and go somewhere. A nice 30 mile loop would take me through neighboring towns; in a half a day I could reach some small town I’d never been to and see things for the first time. I just got an email from my dad saying that he’s going to try to visit every town in Vermont by bicycle this year. Now THAT sounds like fun!

Here in California, I can take off on my bike and ride 100 miles and still be stuck in suburbia. I guess I can start by taking BART to one of the ends of the lines and do some exploring that way. There’s also Marin, I guess. Lots to explore up there.

Somehow I’d really like to recapture the fun of cycling again, even if I am here in California.
