Get up, get out

I count it a small victory to wake up before the alarm goes off. As a lifetime snooze-button abuser and late sleeper, I’m amazed and heartened when my unconscious mind grabs the bootstraps and pulls me into wakefulness at the appropriate time. I wonder if that is a testament to the quality and quantity of the processes that stay running even in my sleep or whether I wake periodically to look at the clock without remembering. Either way, sometimes I will get out of bed one to five minutes prior to the sounding of the alarm.

Today was one of those mornings. I want to run this morning, so I set the alarm earlier than normal, to 4:30. And woke up at 4:25.

I still have trouble getting out of the apartment quickly. I’ll shower at the gym, and I skipped washing my breakfast dishes, so this morning I basically just glanced at my email, picked some clothes, made a nice tofu scramble, brushed my teeth, scooped the catbox, and was out the door. It was still 5:30 when I got out on the street, and I’m left here at ten after six waiting for the F‑Line at one end of the route I mean to run once I get to the beginning, which is likely not to be until close to 7:00am. So much time wasted getting from place to place.

I’m only a mile and a half from my office. I’d strip down and start running here if I had somewhere safe to keep my work clothes or some way to retrieve them.

I’m considering getting a backpack to run with my clothes inside instead of this messenger bag I carry. Then I could start my run at the ferry building and have some extra training weight to make me stronger. I’ve tried keeping clothes at the office, but for a variety of reasons that doesn’t work so well.

Luckily for me, the F‑Line came quickly and moves pretty fast this time of the morning. So I may hit the street as early as 6:35. We’ll see.

OK, gotta run.
