I think it’s the weirdness plus the sense that there are only two kinds of people there: hustlers and marks.

  2. San Francisco is also weird
San Francisco is also weird and scary before you get to know it a bit.

I think Las Vegas is great.

Vegas (the Strip, anyway) is a big 24-hour theme park, with The Star Trek Experience at one end. It’s a state of mind. The past and future are insignificant in Las Vegas.

As for the hustlers and marks, well, it doesn’t look any weirder to me than visiting a shopping mall anywhere else in these great United States.

It’s the advertising-driven consumerist culture taken to its logical extreme: people are spending their money and getting no goods in return. All they are buying is the thrill of spending their money.

As for McCarran, when they tell you to be there no later than 30 minutes before your flight, they mean that you absolutely will not make the flight unless you get there at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure, so that you can take the tram thingie to the gate. Last Vegas trip I showed up a mere 25 minutes early and missed the Last Flight to Oakland.
