Slow run

Five miles today. I targeted a heart rate of 150, was closer to 155 through most of the run. I finished in 59:49, just barely faster than 12 minutes to the mile.

I can’t say I like going that slowly. It feels just as difficult as 9 minute miles but without the extra fun. I guess the point of this is that eventually I should be able to do 9 minute miles at 150 bpm and then I’ll have the best of both worlds, right?

The other thing I don’t like about this pace is that it feels harder on my knees. Maybe I need to eliminate running and do 5 mile walks. That would be a damn shame, though.

  1. Jim Fixx says the optimum
Jim Fixx says the optimum heartrate for a person your age is 158 when training for endurance and offers a range from 131 to 186 for min/max. He says above your optimum you won’t get any faster results, although he adds that a few people’s maximum heart rate will vary from the norm. YMMV.

The fact that you can run 5 miles and swim 1350 meters puts you miles above most people already.
