Next time…

…I decide to wander outside in the middle of the night to tell the policemen what I saw, remember: long pants. And socks. Now I’m frozern.

I hate that, even when I’m paying attention, I have lousy detail retention. How many shots was it? I think seven. What did the guys getting into the car look like? ummmm…

Especially since the Inspector said the victim might not make it, I wish I had a photographic memory. Or at least a camera I could get fired up quickly.

Or a neighborhood where people didn’t get shot.

    Oh, you meant

Oh, you meant actually change place of residence. Yes, that’s happening. You’ll get a change of address postcard, I promise. Middle of July. As soon as the cast of Hairspray vacates my new apartment. The deposit is down, I’ve already had my first resentment toward one of my housemates and I haven’t even moved in yet, so I consider it a done deal.

You’ll also be invited to the housewarming, but we haven’t set a date for that and I know there’s an issue of, you know, a long way to travel for a housewarming party.

  2. Your entry about people
Your entry about people watching on MUNI indicates to me that you have far better detail retention that most people do.

I, too, will be very glad when you have moved, but it is still a city.…

I have been very happy this spring biking the beautiful green hills of VT. The only time I have ever heard gunshots here has been hunting season.

Which reminds me of one of my favorite bumper stickers: “Why do they call it tourist season if you can’t shoot ’em?”

    Keep your head down.

  3. Well, having given partial
Well, having given partial descriptions of suspects to police twice this year now, I’m really coming to appreciate what I’ve heard about eyewitness reports being the least reliable evidence available. I was trying to pay attention and writing down what detail I could get before it left my head, and the model and color of the cars and the number of guys I saw getting into one of the cars was about all I could get.

I feel really stupid not having answers to questions like “what color clothes were they wearing?” or “did either of them have any facial hair?”

I’m pretty good at pattern recognition; I’ll take credit for picking up on the gestures the woman on MUNI made again and again. They might have been lost on someone else, I don’t know. But pattern recognition and detail retention aren’t the same thing. I don’t know if I could pick the guys I saw across the street last night out of a line-up. In fact, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t pick them both out; I might recognize one if I saw him again.
