Alcatraz is OFF (this year)

It’s with regret that I am announcing that because of a combination of factors that I will not be participating in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon this year.

Thanks to everyone that I coerced into supporting me for this event. I hope that you’ll be willing to help me get into the event in 2006.

Since I was not selected in the lottery, I would have had to gather volunteers. Many of the people who were willing to help needed … Read the rest

Brand new levels of geekiness

Say what you want, my newly-populated ant farm is fascinating.

They’ve only been in there for a couple hours and already they’ve taken a sizable chunk out of one corner of their habitat and turned it into small piles.

I knew the iSight and iSightLight would come in handy someday. Although I worry that the constant light from one direction may be affecting the ants’ work habits. Note that it’s the corner nearest the light that’s been chipped away.

Follow-up on stolen helmet

When I stopped for dinner tonight and parked my bike in front of the restaurant where I could keep an eye on it, I went to lock my new helmet to the bike and found that the lock would not close. While not immediately visible, on closer daylight inspection it’s clear that the helmet lock was pried open. It’s bent and tool-marked. So, that means that did lock the helmet, and not just space cadet leave it to be taken.

First drop

On my way to go buy a new helmet this morning, Murphy’s law set in. Maybe I was being overcautious because of the combination of the rain and an untrusted spare helmet, or maybe it was unavoidable, but as I pulled up to a stoplight, the bike went out from under me and hit the pavement on its right side.

I’m completely unhurt. My bike seems completely undamaged, with only some barely-visible scratches on the mirror, rear turn signal, and right-hand … Read the rest

more of a monster who can go either way in

World’s Best Taco Bell

I went riding South yesterday, just a short jaunt, but I went past Pacifica and through Devil’s Slide. I knew I had to get back to meet a friend with whom I had lunch plans, but I really knew I had to get back when it started to look like rain. I did get rained on, just a little, but made it back to SF and indoors in time to watch the rain really come down for about 15 minutes … Read the rest

Uh oh! Safety Recall

It’ll be a little longer before I start taking girls for rides on the motorcycle:

Looks like I have to get the dealer to replace the mounting hardware for the bitch seat. Interesting coincidence: the recall date is the date I bought the bike. The recall notice arrived in the mail yesterday, and I had a friend scheduled to ride with me today. I wanted an experienced rider to ride as my passenger … Read the rest

Life is good

This weekend it’s my turn to do the household cleaning. I think I essentially chased out the rest of the housemates with the vacuum cleaner, but it’s probably their gain since it’s beautiful and sunny outside. I’ve got a lot of the deck doors open and I even let Ozzy go out in the sun, though I kept a close eye on him out there on the deck.

I was mopping the floor of the second level with my headphones on … Read the rest

Practice makes Petrified ‑or- Freaking out the Parents

Freeways are scary.

I’ve been making it a point to practice a lot on the bike. I figure there’s no time like the present to develop my skills. So I’ve been picking less-populated times and places to ride where I’ll have to corner or change lanes or stop on a hill or whatever. I ride through the Presidio on the way to work each day, which forces me to trust that the bike can lean that far over and that yes, … Read the rest
