Camera musing
Thanks to the inspiration from a_flaneur, I began carrying my camera with me again today. Unfortunately, since both of my cameras are so old, I don’t have an easy way to get any pictures off of either of them on my Mac. I think it’s time I got a new camera.
I used to do some interesting (or at least I thought so) experiments with color separation, and I have some ideas for programming Postscript to break apart my images and turn them into huge complex random-looking line fields that look like oddly-colored versions of the originals. I really enjoyed that, but I need images with more resolution because I’d like to make wall-sized posters out of them.
I gave a small (20″ x 30″ print or thereabouts) prototype of this work to a_flaneur and she really seemed to like it.
You can’t see the details, and unfortunately the high-res version of this image was lost years ago, but you can see some of the effect I’m talking about in the following images:
This is the one I gave to a_flaneur:
…and it’s the only one that I can show some of the detail (although it’s the one where the detail is the most boring):
So we’re back to: yet another reason that the digital camera I bought in 1997 really isn’t adequate for my purposes any longer.
Cool photo work. I like it.

Hey, did you get my email re the Cube?
Funny, those pix remind me
Funny, those pix remind me of pix from my Kodak MC3, except I don’t have any control over mine.
I started carrying my MC3 with me, I’m walking on my lunch hours and like having music with me. If I see something, I can shoot it then go back to music.
When I carry a bag, I always have a LOMO with me. Film still rox.
I’m not going to argue with
I’m not going to argue with you about film; I totally agree that it rox. One of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken is here:
[[{“type”:“media”,“view_mode”:“media_large”,“fid”:“40”,“attributes”:{“alt”:””,“class”:“media-image”}}]]
even in lo-res web version you can see the grain. I love that. But it took a number of steps to get from one place to the next, and i don’t have the equipment to do all that stuff. I do have the equipment to do digital manipulation, so there you go.
My MC3 photos all had visual artifacts that I didn’t like. see the banding here:
But I have to admit, it was a darn convenient device. I loved the movies it took.
