Stu­pid thing num­ber one: my broad­band provider could­n’t even put in an order with­out an installed phone line. I had my new num­ber and the phone set up over a month in advance but until the line is actu­al­ly active there’s noth­ing any­one can do, apparently.

So now that SBC admits that I have a phone line (a week after dial tone) they will gra­cious­ly allow the DSL instal­la­tion as ear­ly as the TWENTIETH.

I don’t remem­ber broad­band instal­la­tion tak­ing this long since the days of ISDN, and that required a team of spe­cial­ists to show up onsite.

My house­mate is throw­ing a tem­per tantrum and threat­en­ing not to move in. Swell. This is at the very eleventh hour, and puts Arpine and I in a pret­ty awk­ward posi­tion. He does­n’t like that Arpine did­n’t tell him to just take over the entire apart­ment with his stuff. He said to her, “I’ve already had a moth­er, and I’m in ther­a­py about that. Three blocks away in one direc­tion a neigh­bor’s house is burn­ing down.

Three blocks away in the oth­er direc­tion some oth­er neigh­bors are shoot­ing off huge fire­works. Hun­dreds of feet into the air. The sorts of fire­works that might make a July 4^th exhib­it in a real­ly small town.

So check this: my deposit is paid and so is my rent for July. I can move in as ear­ly as the 5^th, except I won’t even try mov­ing until next week­end. Still have a lot of pack­ing to do, and a whole lot of logis­tics.
