Careerbuilder.com: Spam King of the Recession Age?

Like many Americans these days, I’m hunting for positive cashflow and investigating ways in which I can trade my time and effort for paper I can turn around and trade for food and lodging and art supplies. And in this day and age, the way to do that is through a variety of websites that connect job seekers with employers.

The highest value sites are ones where the employers have to pay to look at a résumé. The logic is … Read the rest

WeRecoverData.com Followup

Yesterday I was surprised to see an email from a gentleman at WeRecoverData.com asking to speak with me about the experience I had earlier this year when I sent a hard disk for data recovery. I was surprised mostly because in May I listed them along with Acomdata as a company «not to do business with». The post itself was a bit more nuanced, but suffice it to say I didn’t portray the company in a glowing light. The email … Read the rest

Some Fix Problems, Others Cause Them

Image(Please also read this follow-up to my experience with WeRecoverData.com)

Finally some good news in my ongoing hard drive drama. After removing the Seagate drive from the Acomdata enclosure and placing it into a new enclosure (a Macally, if anyone cares) the hard drive that I lost during the wind-and-rainstorm here January 4th is now back online. I’ve already told Photoshop to use it as the scratch disk and started Photoshop opening the magenta channel of my latest … Read the rest

Brick and mortars, don’t blame us

It’s a pretty common myth that’s going around these days, that old-fashioned mom and pop businesses are getting gobbled up by evil faceless Internet stores that have no retail space or human interaction to add to their overhead. We’re supposed to feel sad and guilty for buying a book from Amazon instead of a neighborhood book-seller. Our nostalgia—or more accurately a nostalgic-sounding delusion—calls us to the idealization of in-person customer service, individualized attention, and knowledgeable shopkeepers.

Now as it happens, … Read the rest

Watch saga progresses

By the way, here’s the Kenneth Cole watch in question:

A co-worker of mine successfully removed the back from the watch. Now to get a battery in and if it still runs, I’ll get a replacement band. Still mad at those fux0rs.

Here’s what I’m wearing in the meantime:

Which is way dressier and not as manly. But I bought it with my Timex employee discount so that I could wear it to a job interview that got … Read the rest

What time is it?

…it’s time for a new watch.

I don’t mind paying a lot for things. In fact, I rather enjoy spending a lot of money to get what I want. In a situation where one gets what one pays for, one should not pinch pennies. Yes, many times you pay more and get the same crap, or a product that is worse crap, and at those times I don’t recommend throwing away money. But when it comes to getting quality at a … Read the rest
