After call­ing SGI and ask­ing what the last sup­port­ed ver­sion of IRIX would be for an Indigo2 work­sta­tion, I spent an exor­bi­tant amount of mon­ey for a sec­ond­hand set of CDs on ebay. OK, not exor­bi­tant com­pared to the $600 retail price of IRIX, but still more than I’ve ever spent on Oper­at­ing Sys­tem soft­ware ever.

I did research and tin­kered and did more research and more tin­ker­ing and final­ly today I get the answer to why my installs keep failing:

Now I guess I get to look for a copy of IRIX 6.5.22. Maybe some­one wants to trade for 6.5.26.

    I’ll look around for it, but my SGI’s are all in pret­ty sad shape heh.

  2. Oh God no. I’m tear­ing my
    Oh God no. I’m tear­ing my hair out with just ONE of these. I could be tempt­ed by an O2 for the pret­ty case, but I’d have to ditch the Indigo2. I’ve got way too many com­put­ers. Right now I’ve “cut back” to three (oth­er than handhelds—also I don’t count the lap­top that I use as a ter­mi­nal to the RS/6000 as a computer).

    But if you have the base install disks for 6.5.22 or some­thing not too much far­ther back, I’d love to get my paws on them. I’m def­i­nite­ly look­ing for a post-Y2K release if pos­si­ble, which I think means 6.5.7 or newer.

    Dis­re­gard­ing that, I believe that we were talk­ing about a younger Lex. I’d bet that Lex­corp stock has been climb­ing at a steep­er rate than Wayne Enter­pris­es. I’d bet that if we take those num­bers back say, ten years, Lex would be clos­er to a half bil­lion and Bruce at like three and a half. Remem­ber that Bruce is basi­cal­ly rid­ing his father’s suc­cess­es, and prob­a­bly steer­ing the com­pa­ny with a sta­ble, con­ser­v­a­tive, and eth­i­cal hand. Lex bets the farm and cheats, so I think a twen­ty­fold increase in net worth over ten years is lowballing.

    It also depends on the ver­sion of the sto­ry you’re run­ning with. Smal­l­ville Lex is inher­it­ing Lex­corp from Lionel, but the canon­i­cal Lex was lift­ed out of pover­ty by tak­ing out a huge insur­ance pol­i­cy on his par­ents and cut­ting the brake flu­id line in the fam­i­ly auto­mo­bile. Canon­i­cal Lex by the age of Smal­l­ville Lex is prob­a­bly play­ing with only a sev­en-dig­it net worth.
