Mysterious Ways?

OK, so if I were meant to fly, God would have given me wings, right?

And if God had wanted me to be attractive, healthy, and athletic, He would have provided me with the means to afford running shoes and shorts, and three bicycles and would let me live in a beautiful city with a nice climate, full of other runners and cyclists to keep me company.

I guess I just have to wait, huh?

Very Big Grins

Just once in my lifetime I would like to see a piece of open-source software with documentation that bears even slight resemblance to the software it purports to document. JUST ONCE.

In particular I’ve wasted a day and a half on a MySQL installation. The docs say that the default installation has no password for the root user, and yet I run up against “ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: ‘root@localhost’ (Using password: NO)”. Of course there’s all sorts of … Read the rest

Exhausted

It’s been a tough week. One more day and I think I get a three day weekend. That’s a good thing.

I’m wearing more hats than I like at work, and I’m getting spread pretty thin. I’m setting up a webserver to move our sites to, and as Poindexter Fortran likes to say, “beware a programmer with a screwdriver.” In my case, I’m even farther from my core competency.

Today I deinstalled MySQL 3.23 (I think) and installed 4Read the rest

Three Mile Peninsula

Didn’t get up in time to run this morning, in fact I woke up rather late. I blame the standing in the middle of Mission Street at 3am giving a statement to the police for my screwed up sleep. It may be only one factor, but it’s my scapegoat du jour. I made time in the afternoon, and ran three miles.

One inspiring moment today was talking to one of the organizers of the Presidio Relay I want to run … Read the rest

Next time…

…I decide to wander outside in the middle of the night to tell the policemen what I saw, remember: long pants. And socks. Now I’m frozern.

I hate that, even when I’m paying attention, I have lousy detail retention. How many shots was it? I think seven. What did the guys getting into the car look like? ummmm…

Especially since the Inspector said the victim might not make it, I wish I had a photographic memory. Or at least a camera … Read the rest

I clean up OK

I wore my suit to Rich’s bachelor partay tonight. One thing I’m learning is that right after losing 50 pounds is probably a bad time to have one’s suit altered. It seemed like a great idea at the time, but then after I put 30 of it back on I’m left with a suit that doesn’t fit. Ooops. So I sucked it in and walked around looking skinnier than I deserve to.

But I gotta say, the light-colored shirt unbuttoned … Read the rest

Double-digits or how I learned to stop worrying and love the pain

I didn’t mean to, but I picked up a new trick in my run today. I started out thinking I’d run maybe a nice easy three miles. After all, I had not made it out on the road since Bay To Breakers last weekend. I ran the first mile in just over nine minutes. That’s pretty fast for me, so I decided to ease back but go a fourth mile. The second mile was 9:55 but I felt … Read the rest
