I sold my guitar yesterday

My bounced-paycheck woes still have yet to be resolved, So I sold my guitar so that I could get food and even more importantly kitty litter. Pawnshop gave me $50 for it (as a sale—it would have been $40 as a loan), which is not too bad. I bought it for $100 in 1990.

Basically I refuse to take on any new unsecured debt. You can’t get out of debt by borrowing money. Also, lets face … Read the rest

Hooray for the postal services

Last night Y. reported that she received the care package I sent her. Pretty good, actually: San Francisco to Tehran in 7 days. So now I’m a conspirator in transporting restricted goods into another country. The copies of Cool Beans include material the Iranian government would definitely not approve of – I’m thinking about the the photo in the Loners With Boners interview, but I’m sure there are zillions more instances. I also sent her Reading Lolita in Tehran, … Read the rest

I don’t get it

All the time I see guys in my neighborhood walking with their girlfriends and instead of holding hands or having their arm around the girls waist or shoulders, they’re dragging this poor girl around by a hammerlock, their arms around the girl’s neck.

WTF? Do some girls think that’s cool? If I were a girl and some guy did that to me, he’d get one warning before I put him in the hospital.

Yuck.… Read the rest

Goals, again

Well, crap, I made zero progress on my Goals for August 15th and it’s less than a week away now. I gave myself four months and made less than zero progress.

At that time I said I weighed 83 kilos and I could benchpress 55 on a good day. A better assessment would have been 52kg, as I figured out the next day. The goal was to get both numbers to 70kg.

Last night I went … Read the rest

Paradox

Wandering through random people’s journals this morning I came across someone’s journal that resonated with me quite a bit. The more I read, the more intrigued I became. And the more I read, the more I saw ways in which our circumstances are similar, which explained the resonance. And then…

A painful awareness hit me. This person described how she had stopped pursuing dating and romantic relationships because she is whole and does not require a partner to complete her. The … Read the rest

Self-hatred

First, let me say that return-receipt registered mail to Iran is real expensive. But I’m glad that I can do that at all with a country with whom the US has no diplomatic relations. Almost all my international mail in the last eighteen months has just been lost in the void or taken upwards of six months to arrive. But as soon as I started using registered mail, which is supposed to be slower, they started showing up in 5Read the rest

Cuba

Writing a response to an earlier thread got me thinking about some things, specifically about Cuba and women and seeing Cuba before Castro dies, because things will change quite a bit when he’s gone.

My father went to Cuba a couple years ago. He was a part of a “fully hosted” yacht race so it was entirely legal and everything. And he took a lot of pictures. One of my favorite ones is this post’s featured image above.

A couple things about … Read the rest
