What Year 2000 bug?

Been hearing all about the Year 2000 bug these days. In a little over a year civilization as we know it will collapse into utter chaos. Or, depending on who you ask, nothing at all will happen and nobody needs to worry about a thing because it’s all taken care of. Or anyway, it will be all taken care of by the time it matters. It’s the second group that scares me.

But what is going to happen? I mean, … Read the rest

Smoked by a Packard-Bell!

Last night I ran a POV-Ray benchmark available at Haveland-Robinson Associates’ site thinking I was all hot stuff after getting this 300mHz K‑6 machine. My time was 2 minutes 58 seconds. I went to look at the comparison to other peoples’ results and was immediately humbled by the best time reported: 3 seconds. Actually, I think I can feel pretty good about the fact that my machine is only 60 times slower than a Cray T3E-… Read the rest

Cigar

Yes, yes, yes… Smoking is a terrible, disgusting, stinky habit. I know. As a former pack-a-day Camel smoker, I’m the last one you need to tell. Yet somehow, I ended up in the following picture:

How did this happen?

Well, I don’t recommend this to other nicotine addicts, as it is certainly «slippery ground». I have been known, since quitting smoking three
years ago to partake in the occasional cigar during special events. In the time since I quit, I’ve
smoked seven … Read the rest

Apple’s Bad News and Good News

For background, please read the article from news.com.

I don’t know why I care much about the fate of Apple, but I’ve been trying to follow this story along, and I am hopeful about Apple’s future. Although I still wouldn’t buy a Mac for myself (we’ll see how their NeXT-generation machines look? I’m keeping an OpenMind on this issue 🙂 ), I think that Apple has been a great presence in this industry and that it would be a … Read the rest

Lawrence Singleton

The news can be such a pit of despair.

Last night I heard the headline on TV, something to the effect of «Convicted rapist kills Florida woman… should he have been walking the streets a free man?» and I prepared myself for what I expected to be a typical reactionary media story. As many times as we hear reports from the liberal media with their own slant (agreed that the media has a slant… tongue in cheek that it is … Read the rest

Steve’s Red Saturn 1995 – 1995

On Sunday, November 19th 1995 at a few minutes before 4pm I was driving my girlfriend to the train station when a 16 year old driver failed to stop for his red light. There was no time whatsoever to react, and his van collided with my SC2 at about 35mph. I must have heard a noise or caught something in my peripheral vision, because I turned my head in time to see the grill of the … Read the rest
