Candy From Strangers reuniting for AIDS benefit

Saint Frank City received notice that local rock hero Pauli Gray is reuniting Candy from Strangers for an AIDS benefit show this Saturday (June 30th 2007) at the Hotel Utah! All monies go directly to fifteen kids in Africa and the incredible woman who adopted them all. Gray says, «we’ve been doing a yearly AIDS benefit for nine years now so the reunion is on.»

The lineup:

  1. Dave Dalton (Cell Block Five)
  2. Pauli Gray (White Trash Debs/Candy from Strangers)
  3. Cliff

Invasion of the neighborhood-killing helicopters

It’s hardly news that UCSF wants to build a helipad adjoining the new Mission Bay campus. As should be expected, community activists are pounding the pavement trying to drum up resistance. The flyer left on my front porch this morning reads

IMAGINE HELICOPTERS FLYING RIGHT ABOVE YOUR HEAD DAY & NIGHT
UCSF plans to build a helipad at Third/Mariposa!
Join us to tell them NO!

There will be some sort of event at Genentech Hall on June 18th, from 7pm … Read the rest

A Tourist in My Own City, Writing My Own Guide

Despite my recent grumblings about the paper quality of Moleskines, I’m pleased enough with the design to have a few in my current rotation. I’m embarrassed by how many notebooks I have started right now, each with its own dedicated purpose, at least vaguely. The one that I’m most intrigued by as a project is the Moleskine City Notebook for San Francisco. The idea is simple: they provide the basic ingredients of a city guide, the rest is essentially blank.

Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires in Your House

Neighbor’s porchWoke up this morning to the sound of my upstairs neighbor hollering and banging on the door. When I wandered out to see what was going on, it turns out he wasn’t banging on my door, but the back door of the next-door neighbor. Smoke was pouring out of the second-floor window and he was shouting to wake the neighbors.

I dialed 911

just to be safe, but a ladder engine pulled up out front before an operator came on … Read the rest

In Remembrance

Mount Davidson CrossToday is Armenian Remembrance Day, a day set aside in memory of the Armenian genocide by the Turks mostly during World War I.

President Bush made a statement today stating «there cannot be reconciliation until there is truth telling» but stopped short of using the word «genocide.» The government in Ankara still insists that there was no genocide, but historians generally agree that the Turkish slaughter of Armenians was the first genocide of the Twentieth Century.

Finally, a sex scandal I can get behind

I’m writing about this a full week (or more) late, but hey, you don’t come read Monochromatic Outlook for the news.

I try to ignore sex scandals about public officials. For the most part, I think they are a hysterical waste of ink. Bill and Monica? Don’t care now, didn’t then. Does it bother me that POTUS lied? Yeah, a little. It would bother me more if it were about public policy (say something about the reasons for invading another country? … Read the rest

This is just wrong

I like to take myself on mini-adventures. One of my ideas of fun is to hop on my motorcycle and head out into the suburbs to enjoy a movie in a small non-megaplex theater, preferably a single screen, but that’s really hard to find these days. Yeah, it’s just seeing a movie by myself, but I get to venture out and make a fun production out of it.

Well, it’s Friday night and I don’t have a date, so I’m starting … Read the rest

I’ve wanted to do this for quite some time

The first stop was at the ATM. I cleared out the account, I’m afraid. $0.65 left for me to spend recklessly, plus the eighty in cash that’s not in the account any more. Well, I get paid on Monday or Tuesday, so I’ll be fine. It just seems like living on the edge.

The second stop was to fuel up. I love my gas card these days. Especially with a two-and-a-half gallon tank I hate having to hand … Read the rest

World’s Best Taco Bell

I went riding South yesterday, just a short jaunt, but I went past Pacifica and through Devil’s Slide. I knew I had to get back to meet a friend with whom I had lunch plans, but I really knew I had to get back when it started to look like rain. I did get rained on, just a little, but made it back to SF and indoors in time to watch the rain really come down for about 15 minutes … Read the rest
