I got out there for the Cable Car Chase after basically neglecting my training for a month. I don’t really recommend taking a month off, but I learned something about overtraining, I think. I’ve done some swimming and gone to one run training session in the last month, and I’ve been to the gym a couple of times, but basically have not run at all since I did Run Hit Wonder last month.
Cable Car Chase is TODAY! I have to be there at 6:30 to pick up my race number because I didn’t get it yesterday or the day before. So here I am at 6am. The sun hasn’t come up and I’m putting on sunblock. LOL.

5.67 miles, but with some fairly steep hill work. Yay for San Francisco! I’ll be very happy if I finish in under an hour, but that’s a … Read the rest
thanks to Paul Kienitz for this poll.…
I am: -1% Republican. |

I wish I knew what it means. Am I a ‑1 Republican on a score of 1 to 10? or ‑1 to +1? Or ‑10 to +10? I was kind of guessing that I was more like sqrt(-1) Republican, but, well, whatever.

Where do you fall on the liberal — conservative political spectrum? (United States)
brought to you by Quizilla
Just remember that by San Francisco-Berkeley standards, I’m a right-wing fascist. OK, maybe just a moderate fascist. But certainly far enough to the right of center in SF politics to generally avoid telling any of my close friends who I vote for.… Read the rest
I have drawing bristol in 11“Ã14″ inch sheets.
Why do I need a 42″ drawing table?
I mean, even if I actually ever used it, that is.
One housemate took a mattress from the garage that belongs to the landlord. Now the landlord says no bicycles in the garage. Or boxes, or anything. Great.
Housemate claims that the other housemates said it was OK and is defensive, claiming landlord is trying to create drama to have control. Hello? Justifying a wrong action with the overreaction?
I really really don’t like my bikes being outside. It’s not a good way to store bicycles.
The landlord is also saying … Read the rest
I’m continually amazed at how living in my neighborhood is actually living in a neighborhood. This is what urban living is supposed to be. I’ve lived in several neighborhoods here in San Francisco, and it’s only since my latest move that I’ve stumbled upon this non-separate experience of living somewhere.
What I mean by that is that it simply does not fail. I cannot walk down Market Street between Castro and Church without encountering someone I know.
The only annoyance is … Read the rest
I’ve been trying to figure out how to pass values to methods and return values back to the caller in Java.
sub gar
{
$in = $_[0];
$out = "gar gar gar $in gar gar gar";
return( $out );
}
and then every time I want to surround a string in gars I would just do something like:
$newgarstring = gar( $stringtobegarred );
print "$newgarstring\n";
Now it’s occurring to me that maybe this is a … Read the rest
Today after work I went for my first-ever Aquatic Park swim. I borrowed a wetsuit to fend against the cold San Francisco Bay water, and went out into it. I’ve tried twice before without a wetsuit, and chickened out when the water reached my belly. The water, yes, it’s cold.
The wetsuit I borrowed feels too small for me, but maybe that’s just a side effect of being properly snug. It’s a shorty; the sleeves are long but the legs cover … Read the rest
I don’t understand the purpose of an IDE.
I’ve been trying to work with Apple’s XCode and it seems like a capable little text editor with a whole lot of stuff attached that I have no idea what it does. I do most of my work in emacs or BBedit. I have the feeling that XCode would make espresso for me, if I had half a clue. And people I talk to, like Xris say they have been spoiled by IDEs. … Read the rest
