OMFG brain short-circuiting

Second by second, the Qeng Ho counted from the instant that a human had first set foot on Old Earth’s moon. But if you looked at it still more closely… the starting instant was actually some hundred million seconds later, the 0‑second of one of Humankind’s first computer operating systems.

Excessive speed for the freeway

Since I started my new job in Palo Alto, I’ve been riding back, rather than by 280 or the hated 101, by Page Mill Road up to Skyline. It’s a great, fun ride. Page Mill is challengingly twisty and not a very smooth road so I have to be a little cautious. Skyline is smooth and even and about as nice as a two-lane road can be for a fast, relaxed pace. Well, right about the time I got … Read the rest

Oh the humanity

For the last several months I’ve been struggling with The Missing Sync software which handles synchronization between my Palm and my Mac. It’s been very broken and so I’ve had all the conduits disabled. For MONTHS, that is. I’ve been putting up with things not working right because, basically, that’s how computers are. They don’t work right unless you happen to be both highly skilled and have the time to troubleshoot them and bend them to your will.

Today, for whatever … Read the rest

I got out there today

My running this year has been very sporadic. I’ve only logged about 75 miles for the whole year so far. I blame part of it on my new motorcycles (No wonder all those Harley guys are so fat) and part of it on all the transitions I’ve been through this year but the bottom line is, if I’m not running I’m denying myself something I really love.

It took a while to get out there today, but I took advantage of … Read the rest

Red Wings in the shop

I took the Red Wings in to get resoled on Sunday, and they say it’ll take over a week before I get them back. That means I’m going to have to wear some other kind of boots for my ride up to Tahoe and Yosemite this coming weekend.

I’m wearing my Doc Martens around, but I don’t think they’re up for the task of protecting my feet or providing any sort of ankle support. They feel like carpet slippers after … Read the rest

50bookchallenge 20/50: Logan’s World, William F. Nolan

OK, I wanted light reading and I’m a big fan of the film Logan’s Run, so I was intrigued by this sequel when I saw it in ‘s giveaway pile. It was a quick read, I’ll give it that much. Nothing thought-provoking about it and it wasn’t very satisfying. Logan’s the hero, so of course every shot he fires finds its mark and every woman wants his hork tool. Hoodlums recognize him and repay their debts of honor to him Read the rest
